MTHFR Polymorphisms

The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). Genetic mutations of this gene prevents efficient conversion of folic acid to folate. Polymorphisms in the MTHFR gene have been studied as possible risk factors for a variety of common conditions. These include heart disease, stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure (hypertension), neural tube defects, recurrent miscarriage, psychiatric disorders, and certain types of cancer.
